On the anniversary of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010, the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (CBCF) is steering African-Americans to its Understanding Health Reform: A Community Guide for African Americans - available at www.cbcfinc.org - to highlight some of the major provisions within the Act that are critical to the African-American community.

Last year's legislation called for the expansion of health insurance coverage that will help almost 8 million African Americans; increases the diversity, cultural and linguistic competence of health service providers; and strengthen protections for approximately 25 percent of African Americans who have a pre-existing condition by ending discrimination based on their health status. However, the law remains a mystery for most Americans and many are still unsure of its benefits.

"Health care reform is probably the most important policy decision of our generation and one of the most significant directives to benefit Americans in general and African Americans specifically," said Rep. Donald M. Payne of New Jersey and chairman of the CBCF. "The Health Care Reform Act will have an equitable and direct impact on access to affordable health care while improving the well being of all Americans and African Americans in particular across the country."
