Howard County Executive Ken Ulman announced today that the County will begin delivering food scrap carts to almost 1,000 volunteer households in Ellicott City and Elkridge starting next week. A mini-pilot conducted last year concluded that the composting project would reduce landfill waste and disposal costs. “It’s good for the environment and good for the County’s bottom line,†said County Executive Ulman.
The pilot program is available to approximately 5,000 households in one of the County’s contracted collection routes. A map of the selected area can be found on www.HowardCountyRecycles.org. Volunteers signed up through the mail, or by filling out an online form at www.HowardCountyRecycles.org. Residents should be reminded that it is not too late to sign up for this innovative program and requests to participate are still being accepted.
The curbside food scrap pilot program allows participating households to place food scraps including fruit and vegetable scraps, stale bread, egg shells and coffee grounds in a designated cart for collection. Materials such as meat, dairy and oils, often the most odor causing items, will not be accepted in this program. Collected materials will be composted â€" this process turns unwanted materials into a valuable product that improves soil and plant health, leading to naturally greener lawns, better tasting fruits and vegetables and more vibrant flowers.
