The Health Options and Positive Energy Foundation, Inc. (HOPE DC) will celebrate 23 years of bringing together the HIV+ community in Washington, DC. The celebration will be marked by a social much like the very first gathering that initiated the HOPE DC community.

In keeping with a tradition now more than two decades in the making, the HOPE DC anniversary celebration will be hosted this Saturday evening by a generous foundation member in a private home located in the in DC, MD, VA area. Details are available upon request.

The HOPE Foundation originated in 1988, during the darkest days of the AIDS epidemic, when a small group of HIV+ men met at Georgetown Hospital during clinical trials of life-saving treatments. They decided to bind together for mutual moral support away from the hospital and began hosting private social events throughout the district. The clinical trial is long since history, but the fellowship that they started is still going strong.

"We celebrate the dramatic medical breakthroughs that have turned HIV into a manageable condition, but we are deeply aware of the social challenges of living well and responsibly with HIV,” explained Jim Garza, Vice-President of the HOPE Foundation. “That is why, after more than 23 years, we are still here and will continue to be here as long there is a need.”

Back to School Supply Drive www.twfbacktoschooldrive.com proceeds will enable The Warford Foundation to provide school supplies to the children of the single mothers and military widows attending Prince George’s Community College. Therefore, in an effort to meet our goals, we are hosting a back to school supply drive on Saturday, August 6, 2011 from 2:00 â€" 5:00pm. The event will take place at the Largo Community Center on the campus of Prince George’s Community College, Largo, Maryland. The supply drive will include live music from recording artist within the Washington, DC metro area, live broadcast from local radio stations, games, and 50/50 raffle. Guest list includes several celebrities; professional athletes so don’t miss out. Cost of attendance is $10 or a donation of back to school supplies for children K-12. All proceeds will go to the single mothers and military widows attending Prince George’s Community College.

The foundation has partnered with the Nursing Department of Prince George’s Community College to award at least two (2) financial assistance awards for $250.00 per semester for books beginning Spring 2012 school year to qualified single mother and/or military widow.

The Warford Foundation has a mission to expand the opportunities of single mother families by increasing self sufficiency through scholastic growth and achievement. We intend to reach out to the single mothers and military widows that lost their loved ones due to the current war. Our founder, as a retired U.S. Army soldier, is familiar with the plight of the military spouse. She understands that the impact of having a spouse serving their country fighting this Nation's war one day and being told the next day that you are now a widow with kids and no skills can be devastating.

Our vision is to help these single mothers-who are often forgotten about after the funerals and other military rituals-as well as other single mothers who also are in need of financial assistance to obtain an associate's degree to become a registered nurse.

Qualifying criteria for Project IMPACT SCHOLARS:

Single mothers / military widows qualify for the program Qualifying candidates will possess at minimum a high school diploma or GED Qualifying candidates must possess a 3.0 GPA or higher (if recently graduated) Qualifying candidates will have a household income of no more than $40,000 (criteria for Washington, DC area/future service areas may increase or decrease the qualifying figure) All participants must do community service hours to stay in the program; community service consists of volunteering in foundation events.

Applications are being accepted now until November 15, 2011 for interested single mothers/military widows. http://thewarfordfoundation.org/Projects.html

Save Summer Jobs in PA

Save Summer Jobs in PA

Last year, WorkReady Philadelphia programs placed more than 11,000 young people in summer jobs. This city-wide system is supported by grants from the city, federal government, school district and local foundations as well as many area businesses that hire and pay for interns. Despite last summer’s record number, there were still 10,000 more youth who wanted to work but couldn’t because there weren’t enough funded positions. While WorkReady Philadelphia will continue to advocate for government funding as well as apply for foundation grants and recruit more employers to support internships, there is an expected decline in the number of job opportunities available to young people this summer. Without additional support, we could lose 5,500 jobs for local youth. That’s why WorkReady Philadelphia started the Save Summer Jobs campaign, which allows anyone at any giving level to co! ntribute to providing valuable summer job experiences for Philadelphia’s young people. Our kids need your help to bridge the gap!

Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) is trying to fight back at a determination by the Department of Labor (DOL) that says the school system erred in compensating teachers in its H-1B temporary foreign worker visa program.

PGCPS Superintendent William Hite, who said the county will appeal the decision, acknowledged mistakes were made, but said officials acted swiftly to correct those problems.

“In our attempt to comply with the rigorous mandates of the Federal No Child Left Behind Act, the school system processed applications of our foreign national employees and required that they pay certain fees upfront,” Hite wrote in a blog. “However, once we were told by the Department of Labor that the process we were using was incorrect, we immediately began paying the fees and we reimbursed the impacted employees.”

The deans of Abet-accredited Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) in conjunction with the corporate-academic alliance members of Advancing Minorities' Interest in Engineering (AMIE) have selected Chrysler Group LLC as a Top Supporter of HBCU and other minority-serving institutions. Chrysler joins a distinguished list of corporate and governmental leaders engaged in supporting the development and recruitment of talent students pursuing technical careers at the nation's minority-serving institutions.

"America's future in the global marketplace -- indeed, Chrysler's viability -- depends on the development of diverse technical talent. Chrysler Group is proud to be among those employers who are considered leaders in developing and recruiting diverse technical talent at the nation's minority-serving institutions," said Lisa J. Wicker, Director - Office of Talent Acquisition, Global Diversity and Compliance, Chrysler Group LLC. "Our relationships with these institutions helps Chrysler Group to secure the diverse technical talent we need to compete and to sustain our success."

This ninth annual survey of education leaders was conducted by U.S. Black Engineer & Information Technology magazine. In completing the annual survey, the deans considered a corporate or governmental candidate's support for infrastructure modernization and enhancement, research, participation on advisory councils, faculty development opportunities, scholarships, student projects, co-ops and career opportunities.

Discovery Communications’ Planet Green is airing a one-hour documentary on the environmental leadership of Rev. Lennox Yearwood, Jr, one of the nation’s most compelling contemporary civil rights leaders. The film, titled ‘HIP HOP REV’, (www.HipHopRev.com) captures a stunning but often unseen side to environmental activism. HIP HOP REV premieres on PLANET GREEN on Saturday, April 23 at 4pm ET.

“I am truly grateful for this tremendous opportunity to be the subject of Planet Green’s documentary. I love that the audience will see what I see every day, the brilliance and beauty of young people of color fighting to save our planet,” said Rev. Lennox Yearwood Jr. “I hope this film helps more people understand that when you sacrifice for what you believe in, there are hardships, but those hardships are nothing compared to the blessings that ultimately come to you and your community.”

HIP HOP REV is a one year journey where the cameras capture the highs and lows of Rev Yearwood’s efforts to involve urban communities in climate activism and green economy solutions. Rev Yearwood, who is President and CEO of the Hip Hop Caucus, is seen launching environmental initiatives at the West Wing of the White House and the steps of Capitol Hill, demonstrating his political savvy and influence. The documentary also shows Rev Yearwood in his home state of Louisiana, leading the 5th Anniversary Annual Commemoration March for Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. A backbone to the film is him and his team embarking on the Hip Hop Caucus Clean Energy Bus Tour which traveled to nine different cities and Historically Black Colleges/Universities in seven days.

"Witnessing the power and influence of Rev Yearwood and the Hip Hop Caucus was amazing and very moving,” said Jon-Barrie Waddell, Executive Producer and Director of the film. “The Hip Hop Caucus’ campaigns earn Rev Yearwood huge respect from a wide circle of people, from the young man on the street to top Hip Hop artists and politicians. Our documentary captures the start of a long, uphill journey as Rev Yearwood continues his tireless fight to empower those worst hit by the environmental crisis.”
