In the wake of Osama bin Laden's demise, is al Qaeda falling apart? The Saudi Interior Ministry said today that a senior al Qaeda member on Riyadh's most-wanted list named Khaled al-Qahtani called from abroad and turned himself in. "Interior Ministry's spokesman Maj. Gen. Mansour Al-Turki said in a statement Wednesday that Khaled Hathal Abdullah al-Atifi al-Qahtani contacted the security authorities from an undisclosed country and expressed his wish to come home," the Associated Press reports.

Last year, WorkReady Philadelphia programs placed more than 11,000 young people in summer jobs. This city-wide system is supported by grants from the city, federal government, school district and local foundations as well as many area businesses that hire and pay for interns. Despite last summer’s record number, there were still 10,000 more youth who wanted to work but couldn’t because there weren’t enough funded positions. While WorkReady Philadelphia will continue to advocate for government funding as well as apply for foundation grants and recruit more employers to support internships, there is an expected decline in the number of job opportunities available to young people this summer. Without additional support, we could lose 5,500 jobs for local youth. That’s why WorkReady Philadelphia started the Save Summer Jobs campaign, which allows anyone at any giving level to co! ntribute to providing valuable summer job experiences for Philadelphia’s young people. Our kids need your help to bridge the gap!

Mayor Michael A. Nutter and the City’s partners launched the “Freedom Rings Partnership” at today’s official opening of the Philadelphia FIGHT Computing Center. The official opening of this location is the first of 77 public computer centers that will open across the City and provide digital literacy and workforce training opportunities.

The following organizations will also participate in the “Freedom Rings Partnership”:

â–ªYouth Outreach Adolescent Community Awareness Project

â–ªPhiladelphia Opportunities Industrialization Center, Inc.

â–ªOne Day At A Time

â–ªDrexel University

â–ªFree Library of Philadelphia

â–ªDepartment of Parks and Recreation

▪People’s Emergency Center

â–ªMedia Mobilizing Project

â–ªNational Comprehensive Center for Fathers

â–ªRutgers University

â–ªNew America Foundation

â–ªTenant Support Services, Inc.

“The Freedom Rings Partnership will help more residents develop valuable digital literacy and workforce skills so they can remain competitive in today’s 21st Century economy,” said Mayor Nutter. “We thank Philadelphia FIGHT and all of our partners for their commitment to bridging the digital divide so all communities, particularly underserved residents, can develop valuable skills that will enhance their ability to work toward a better quality of life.”

This partnership will create over 200 jobs.

A breakdown of the $25 million initiative, which is funded through the Federal American Recovery Reinvestment Act’s Broadband Technology Opportunity Program, is as follows:

* A $6.4 million Public Computing Centers Award provided to the City

* An $11.8 million Sustainable Broadband Adoption Award to the Urban Affairs Coalition, the lead partnering organization.

* $3.3 million in matching funds provided by the City and other grant sub-recipients.

* $3.6 million in matching funds provided by the Urban Affairs Coalition and grant sub-recipients

On Thursday, May 5, Mayor Vincent C. Gray and his son, Carlos Gray, will present a ceremonial key to the city to popular R&B/neo-soul singer Raheem DeVaughn for his “tireless commitment to youth and HIV/AIDS awareness.” The ceremony will take place at 2:00 p.m. on the front steps of the John A. Wilson Building, 1350 Pennsylvania Avenue NW. DeVaughn, 35, who was nominated for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance at the 2008 Grammy Awards for his hit single “Woman,” was born in Newark, N.J., but raised in Maryland counties (Montgomery and Prince George’s) adjacent to the District of Columbia. He broke into the music industry by working the District music circuit, performing with popular local groups and at venues along the U Street corridor. Throughout his career, DeVaughn has participated in youth-oriented programs and been a strong advocate of students staying in school. He has also been heavily involved with HIV/AIDS awareness, which has been enhanced by his five-year partnership with the Centers for Disease Control. Mayor Gray chose to recognize DeVaughn because of the singer’s concern for youth and HIV/AIDS awareness along with his immense popularity among young listeners, especially in the metropolitan Washington area. The day of the ceremony will also be DeVaugn’s birthday. He will be 36 years old.
