The term "Food Desert" may be new to you but some it is reality . A food desert according to the Richmond City government is an area without access to healthy, nutritional, fresh food.

Lucky, for the city of Richmond VA, the leadership has come up with a plan to help the community and stimulate the economy .

Mayor Dwight C. Jones today announced a new monthly grocery shuttle offering transportation for Richmond residents to local grocery stores. The courtesy service is being piloted for residents in areas of the city considered to be in food deserts â€" areas without access to healthy, nutritional, fresh food.

A transportation support system is one of the preliminary recommendations of the Mayor’s Food Policy Task Force. “This is a recommendation that we can act on right away,” said Mayor Jones. “Helping city residents access healthy and fresh food options tie right in with the City’s healthy lifestyle focus.”

The food desert areas that have been focused on for this pilot project include Hillside Court, Fay Tower, Creighton Court, Fairfield, Mosby and Whitcomb. The pilot project will run for a six month period and then the City will access its usefulness and sustainability.

The Mayor’s Food Policy Task Force is presently working on recommendations for a comprehensive food delivery system in the city of Richmond. Several community meetings are set to take place to receive additional ideas about how to help ensure that the city is a healthy and accessible environment for all.

The RVA Shoppers’ Shuttle will run the first Tuesday and first Saturday of each month beginning on Saturday, February 4th, 2012.

Noting that the occupiers in the yard next across from his looked a little “sickly and malnourished”, Richmond Mayor Dwight Jones announced an initiative to give the occupiers free servings of aerosolized vegetable spray, starting next Monday.

“It pains me greatly to see these young people living in tents and eating poorly-prepared, nutrient-free meals,” said the Mayor. “So as mayor, I am going to appropriate funds from the general fund to give this vegetable spray to the occupiers. Believe me, it is the least I can do as my way of saying sorry after the Kanawha fiasco.” (Richmond police broke up the Kanawha occupation at 1 AM Halloween night, drawing heavy criticism for their heavy-handed tactics).

A Richmond sheriff’s deputy has been placed on leave without pay after his arrest last week on charges of taking indecent liberties with two 14-year-old girls. Richmond Sheriff C.T. Woody Jr. said this morning that the offenses in Henrico County occurred when Aaron Clevert, 21, was off-duty. Henrico police arrested Clevert Friday on two counts of taking indecent liberties with a minor after he yelled at two juvenile females that he was going to rape them, according to Henrico police. The incident occurred in the 11400 block of West Broad Street. Clevert lives in the Twin Hickory area in the 5000 block of Willows Green Road. It was not immediately clear how long he had worked as a deputy.
